When Equipment Fails: How a Photographer Turned Frustration into a System

Anyone who has been taking photographs for long enough knows that moment: when equipment fails exactly when everything depends on it. For Riko Best, this was not an isolated incident, but a recurring pattern. Instead of accepting it, he made it his starting point.

The photographer, author and founder of the Filterfotograf brand represents a growing group of professionals who move from critique to creation. Not driven by ambition alone, but by a clear conclusion: the product he needed did not exist.

Best began his career in professional wedding photography, an environment where reliability is non-negotiable.
“In wedding photography, you don’t get a second chance. If a system fails or a filter introduces a colour cast that you only notice later, that moment is gone.”

When he shifted his focus to landscape photography, the demands changed but did not become easier. Wind, moisture, temperature shifts and time pressure became constant variables. The question was no longer just image quality, but whether equipment performs under real conditions.

The Photographer as a Market Observer

With a large international audience, multiple books and years of workshops and expeditions, Best developed a perspective that goes far beyond personal preference. Across different systems, the same structural weaknesses kept appearing: instability in wind, inconsistent handling, colour shifts during long exposures, and setups that slow photographers down precisely when speed matters.

“What was missing wasn’t a better filter holder. What was missing was a system designed from the user’s perspective.”

Turning that insight into a product proved more complex than expected.
“I underestimated how far the path is from idea to production. The first prototype might look convincing, but real conditions expose every weakness.”

Development was driven by field use rather than theory. Each iteration was tested under the same conditions in which it would later be used.

From Observation to Application

The result is a modular filter system that combines round and rectangular filters within a single integrated setup. Instead of forcing photographers to replace existing equipment, the system allows for flexible integration of what they already use.

Precision in operation became a central focus. Filters move consistently within the guide rails, even under demanding conditions such as sand, salt or low temperatures. Handling was designed for real use. The polarising filter can be adjusted directly and precisely, even with gloves, without interrupting the workflow.

Wide angle performance was addressed to avoid vignetting and maintain a clean image frame at shorter focal lengths. At the same time, the system supports the combined use of multiple filters without compromising usability.

Colour neutrality remains one of the most critical quality criteria. While colour shifts can be corrected in post production, this contradicts the fundamental idea of a tool that is meant to simplify the process, not complicate it.

Experience as a Development Driver

What distinguishes this approach is the depth of input behind it. Over the years, Best not only gathered his own experience, but also systematically incorporated feedback from a broad community through workshops, direct exchange and field work. This allowed him to distinguish between isolated issues and recurring structural problems.

“When I develop a product, I stand by everything I have ever said publicly. That creates pressure, but it also ensures clarity.”

Digitalisation has lowered the barriers to entry. Rapid prototyping and global production networks make independent product development increasingly viable.
“Technology makes development possible. But user experience defines whether a product actually works.”
