Britain’s Job-Hunting Hotspots Revealed – The Areas Where “Jobs Near Me” Searches Are Surging
Fresh analysis has revealed where people across Britain are most actively looking for work.

New research examining Google search behaviour shows which parts of the UK contribute the largest share of the nation’s average 550,000 monthly searches for the term “jobs near me.”
The study, conducted by Plus500, highlights striking regional differences in employment engagement.
The findings point to a clear divide across England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland, with urban economies dominating national search behaviour.
Unsurprisingly, Greater London dominates the national landscape, accounting for 13.9% of all searches – the equivalent of around 76,450 people typing “jobs near me” into Google each month.
That figure alone represents more than double the share of the second-ranked region. With rapid staff turnover, a vast commuter base, and a constantly evolving service economy, the capital remains Britain’s most competitive labour market.
Even the City of London contributes a further 0.30% (1,650 monthly searches), reflecting the concentration of employment within the Square Mile.
Major Urban Centres
Outside the capital, large metropolitan regions continue to capture a significant proportion of national interest.
The West Midlands ranks second, making up 6.10% of searches (33,550 per month), while Greater Manchester represents 4.40% (24,200 searches).
Further north, West Yorkshire – home to Leeds, Bradford, and Wakefield – accounts for 3.80% (20,900 searches), reinforcing the strength of Yorkshire’s employment hubs.
In the North West, Lancashire contributes 2.50% (13,750 searches), while Merseyside captures 1.80% (9,900 searches).
Meanwhile, Tyne and Wear represents 2% of total queries (11,000 per month), highlighting continued labour mobility in the North East.
The South East’s Strong Showing
The commuter belt also features prominently.
Kent makes up 3.70% of national searches (20,350 per month), placing it among the most active counties outside the capital. Hampshire accounts for 2.70% (14,850 searches), reflecting demand across Portsmouth, Southampton and surrounding towns.
Essex contributes 2.60% (14,300 searches), while Surrey represents 1.60% (8,800 searches). Nearby Hertfordshire also captures 1.40% (7,700 searches), underscoring the South East’s high employment churn.
Steady Mid-Tier Regions
A broad group of counties each make up between 1% and 2% of total UK searches, indicating steady employment movement rather than sharp metropolitan spikes.
Norfolk and Staffordshire account for 1.70% (9,350 searches), while South Yorkshire contributes 1.60% (8,800 searches).
Derbyshire, County Durham, Lincolnshire and North Yorkshire each account for 1.50% (8,250 searches). Cheshire represents 1.30% (7,150 searches), while Cambridgeshire and Bedfordshire each contribute 1.20% (6,600 searches).
Elsewhere, Cornwall and Suffolk each make up 1.10%, while Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Leicestershire each represent 1% of national interest.
Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland
In Scotland, City of Glasgow accounts for 0.90% (4,950 searches), followed by City of Edinburgh at 0.50% (2,750). Fife contributes 0.40%, while West Lothian represents 0.30%.
In Wales, Glamorgan sees 0.60% (3,300 searches), highlighting steady engagement across South Wales.
Across Northern Ireland, City of Belfast accounts for 0.20% (1,100 searches), while Londonderry and Tyrone each share 0.10%.
